Southern style

The other day Hubbykins requested “country food.” Well, I fixed him right up. Fried chicken, potatoe salad and fresh corn. Oh my it was so good I just had to make everyone’s mouth water. 😀 No I don’t normally do the cooking and tomorrow Hubbykins has already said we were having hot dogs.

Happy quilting!

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Some Americans view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer and Labor Day as the unofficial end of the season (with the 4th of July as the very hot middle). In the Northern United States, it is the traditional weekend in which people reopen pools that had been covered for the winter.

In addition to national observances, many individual communities hold memorial observance for fallen soldiers who were from that town by having a ceremony in a church or town memorial park. It is common for fire and police departments to remember and honor members lost in the line of duty. Towns often hold a Memorial Day parade in honor of such residents.

The Vietnam traveling wall is at Ft. Campbell this weekend and we hope to get to see the wall. I hope each of you enjoy your holiday.

Cottage blocks

Sunday I printed out the instuctions for the cottage blocks. I went Saturday in search of the perfect fabric to make my July cottages. Obviously the fabric designers did not take a look into my mind as I didn’t find the perfect July fabric but I did find some I will be happy with. I just hope the other cottage makers will be happy also.

I made a test block and I don’t like it. I do intend to add up hills to it but by the time I got this point my was entirely too friendly with my seam ripper. Nasty little gadget! I do think the actual blocks for the swap will go much better but I do think it will take me from now until July 1st. 😉 I will show the swap block after everyone receives it.

Cupcakes

I made these Oreo Mint cupcakes because everyone loves cupcakes. According to Nikolas you have to take the cookie off the top of the cupcake first and eat that. Then one of your parents must remove the paper cup from the cupcake, tear in half and then eat. 😉 He ate everyone like that. Head on over to Megan’s Munchies for great easy recipes.

I also made the Banana Toffee cupcakes but they went so fast I didn’t get a photo.

Happy baking!

Kitchen Theme swap final

My swap partner posted that she received the mini quilt and towel. I thought they turned out pretty good. I have one more swap to complete and then I must get busy doing some of my quilting projects. I love the swaps but I seem to put my projects on the back burner to meet the deadline.

Binding

I hate sewing the binding on a a quilt. Mine never turn out pretty. Sew if you have a method that is better than the method I’ve been using, please feel free to share. Those mitered corners get me every time. 😦

I have been using the method that Pat Sloan uses. Straight stitch binding to the back of the quilt, bring to the front and stitch using a buttonhole stitch. The last time I stitched to the back and then sewed it by hand to the front, I did not use a buttonhole stitch.

Whoops-a-daisy has instructions for binding using fusible. hmmm, I will give this a try.  How to Make Fusible Quilt Binding

Have a great week! I’m working a temporary job this week so I hope to get some yo-yo’s made and that is about it.

Only 1 more

Only 1 more post about the kitchen mini swap after this one where I will show the towel and mini quilt are revealed. I quilted the mini quilt Wednesday morning, it didn’t start off to well but ended very well. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get my free motion quilting to look right, so I cross hatched. Here is the sneak peek.  I’m excited to get my kitchen theme goodies.

May Cottage

Betsy is hosting a cottage block swap. There are 12 of us, each person has a month. Mary had May which was the first month and trust me, Mary is going to be a hard act to follow. The block is outstanding.  I’m so excited about this swap. I can’t wait to see the other blocks. I will be doing July and I’m on the prowl for a certain type of fabric. 😉 Mary also gifted us with a matching towel.  How sweet was that?
